Peterborough 0-2 Sunderland
Posted by: | Comments
Two goals in 3 minutes won the game for us at London Road. With debutant Frazier Campbell winning and scoring a penalty.
The game was pretty much non-eventful, a typical pre-season friendly up until Bruce made a few changes and injected some extra quality into the Sunderland side. Reid and Kenwyne Jones were brought on to replace Murphy and Stokes.
Sunderland’s first goal was diverted from a low Healy cross by Blanchett who sent the ball past his own keeper to make it one nil. Three minutes later Campbell was tripped by a Peterborough defender after showing some good footwork. It was a clear penalty and Campbell stepped up to dispatch his first goal for the lads.

I know friendlies don’t exactly mean much but it’s better to win than lose and deep down, although it’s not important it’s always nice to be able to come away from a game with the satisfaction of getting one over the opposition and their supporters.
Overall, the lads played well, Jones looked dangerous and it was nice to see Rchardson add to his pre-season goal tally. Let’s hope he can carry his goal-scoring form on into the new season.
Sunderland started with quite a strong line-up, a similar team to what we fielded at the end of last season (ok…not that strong then…but stronger than a Celtic reserve side). Campbell and Cana the new boys started on the bench and were both given a run-out in the second half. I look forward to seeing the two of them against Bolton on the opening day.
Jones made it 2-0 in the second half, after some good work down the wing from a ’svelte’ looking Andy Reid. Crossing the ball in making it harder for Jones to miss than score. Marc Crosas pulled a consolation goal back for Celtic and they came close to equalising a few minutes from the end with a header but it ended going horribly wide (unlucky).
The Sunderland fans took part in a moving tribute to the late Bobby Robson, joining in with a fantastic minute’s applause.
