Bruce Blamed For Wigan Defeat
Posted by: | Comments
Steve Bruce will be surprised to learn that it was his fault that Wigan lost 9-1 to Spurs on Sunday. Or at least that’s what Dave Whelan believes.
Commenting after the embarrassing defeat, Whelan said: “9-1 is a serious, serious defeat and we have got to get our heads up and I am sure Roberto will be working on the lads now to get them going again,” Whelan said. “I have complete faith in him and I know the supporters have. He has got a difficult time, he inherited a team that was a little bit weak on reserves when Steve left.
“Steve actually had a few dodgy signings just before he left Wigan and [Martínez] has inherited those dodgy signings, so I can’t blame Roberto one iota. I am absolutely 100 per cent behind Roberto, he’s a great manager and he will pull this team around.”
In that case shouldn’t Whelan have given Bruce some plaudits for their wins against Chelsea and Villa?
Bruce Expects Much Of The Same At Wigan

Steve Bruce has sent out a firm warning to his Sunderland players that they will be forced to “walk home” if they don’t perform against Wigan next week.
Sunderland beat Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday and Bruce expects his team to pick up where his team left off against Wigan. Wigan were beaten 9-1 away to Spurs yesterday and will no doubt want to put that heavy defeat behind them by getting some much needed points in the bag.
Wigan is always a tough place to go and in recent times our record against the Latics has made for poor reading.
Bruce said: “I have just said to them if we do not perform at Wigan I will kick all their a***s and they can walk home.
“But we are going into December and I can only think of Burnley in the second half and Birmingham when we have not played well, so two out of 13 suggests we are starting to get some consistency.
“The most important thing is our performances at home. Last year, it was a big big struggle. Last year, we only won six here. We have nearly done that already. It will take time, three, four six months, maybe a couple of years, but I am delighted when
I see the crowd today, 45,000 is fantastic. Am I ahead of schedule? Well I would have taken it at the start of the season.”
It should be a good day out next week, we’ve started the season very well. Bruce has brought some much needed organisation to the Sunderland team, we’re playing entertaining football and we’re scoring goals! Backed by 4-5,000 passionate Sunderland fans should make for a great away day.

Sunderland Had No Chance – Arsene Wenger
Posted by: | CommentsArsene Wenger reckons Sunderland didn’t have a chance against Arsenal yesterday.
He must have missed the goal then.
What is it with Wenger? He’s always the same. We put in a great performance against Arsenal at the Emirates last season, again creating the better opportunities (especially in the first half) but instead of acknowledging our performance he decided to attack our choice of tactics.
Arsenal were also very lucky to rescue a point in the dying minutes of injury time last season at the Stadium of Light. But yeah…our tactics were to blame as Arsenal should have been allowed to beat us convincingly.
You have to earn your points Arsene and yesterday your team were beaten by the better side on the day. It’s no-one’s fault but your own I’m afraid.
Sunderland Beat Arsenal – Unlucky Arsene

So there you have it. After being inundated with emails from Arsenal fans suggesting I was out of touch with reality…Sunderland have beaten Arsenal.
It was a closely fought contest and both teams created opportunities. It was a fairly even game throughout but when Bent scored with 19 minutes remaining, Sunderland had begun to up their game and they were rewarded for their efforts.
Malbranque went close a few times in the first half after Rosicky had a shot saved by Martin Fulop in the first 5 minutes.
Cana and Da Silva were the stand out players. Cana ran for every ball, harassed the Arsenal midfield and simply would not allow them to settle. He won ball after ball, broke down the play and was intent on casually passing the ball around the park. He really looked a class above the rest today. Paulo Da Silva was a real presence in defence, like Cana he looked like he had a lot of time on the ball. He won the majority of headers, brought a real hardness to our back four and his distribution was excellent.
Bent added to his goal tally after the ball cannoned back off Frazier Campbell from an Andy Reid corner. The ball rather fortunately fell right into Darren Bent’s path and he took his chance with a sliding shot which smashed the ball past the helpless Almunia and into the back of the net.
Arsenal woke up a little after that and created a few opportunities for themselves but they found it difficult to hold onto the ball. They protested for a penalty in injury time but they were desperate claims from a team and their supporters who were all but resigned to a defeat. Richardson had the best chance after Bent’s goal and it really should have been 2-0.
All in all, a fantastic result. I haven’t read Wenger’s comments yet but no doubt he’ll be full of moaning with zero praise. He usually lacks class when things don’t go his way.
Haway the lads!
