Sunderland Tie Up Al-Muhammadi Deal
Posted by: | Comments
Apparently we’ve signed Egyptian Right-Back Ahmed Al Muhammadi. It should be fun thinking of a chant for this lad. Feel free to make your own suggestions.
He’ll be signing for Sunderland off the back of winning the African Nations cup with Egypt. He’s only 22 and was on trial with us in August but we failed to agree a fee with his club ENPPI.
Let’s hope Brucie’s found a gem in this lad.
Check out this goal (I look forward to seeing him do this week in week out. No pressure on the lad):
In other news, Daryl Murphy has joined Ipswich on loan. He’s not going to do anything here so I think it suits all parties (actually it doesn’t, it suits us and Roy Keane, unlucky Ipswich. Then again he has scored some important goals for us and was quite an influential player in the Championship. A move might be just what he needs).
Sunderland To Sign Robbie Keane?

The rumours linking Sunderland with Robbie Keane have been in circulation since Peter Reid was at the helm. We’ve been linked with Keane every season for about 10 years now but this time the rumours appear to have a hint of truth.
Robbie Keane has fallen out of favour at Spurs, with Defoe and Crouch both in fantastic form. Reports from the Daily mail suggest Robbie Keane will sign for Sunderland for around £10m before the transfer window closes tomorrow.
I’d like to think it’s true but I won’t be holding my breath and I’m unsure if it would be the right decision if it meant Kenwyne Jones would then be allowed to leave. Bent, Jones, Keane and Campbell would offer us true Premier League quality going forward. Let’s hope Bruce further strengthens our defence and midfield in the process!
Robbie Keane in action:
Sunderland Vs Stoke City – Due A Win
Posted by: | Comments
We entertain Stoke City tomorrow at the Sunderland Stadium of Light and it’s the first home game we’ve had since we played Barrow Town in the FA Cup on the 2nd of this month.
We haven’t won in the league for 9 games now and our fans are becoming increasingly frustrated. The football has been poor and the fight we saw at the beginning of the season has been missing. No doubt it’ll be a nervous night at the Stadium of Light as we’re currently only 3 points above the relegation zone.
We’ve still got to remain positive.
We’ve had horrendous luck with injuries over the past few months and we’re only beginning to see several of our key players return to action. Cattermole made an appearance against Everton on Wednesday night but he was substituted at half-tight with a slight hamstring injury. Steve Bruce is optimistic that he will be fit to play against Stoke City though.
Michael Turner should also be back in the frame after missing the game in midweek through a knee injury. Phil Bardsley could be available as well having recovered from a slight hamstring strain. With all things considered we could be entering the game against Stoke City with our strongest side for months.
It’s a must win game and a game we should feel confident about winning. Stoke are a strong side and have consistently churned out the results when it’s mattered over the past few seasons. But they’re very much ’smash and grab’ with their long-throw ins and big forwards (possibly a little harsh on Fuller as he does like to get the ball on the ground and we all know he has the skills to create something special out of nothing. It’s a shame Kenwyne can’t take a leaf out of his book). If we can recreate the quality we showed against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester Utd this season we should have no problem turning them over.
The atmosphere at the Stadium of Light has been rocking at times this season. Let’s get it back in full swing tomorrow night when the “loudest fans” in the country make the trip up from Staffordshire. Let’s show them what it takes to gain such an accolade.
Bruce Wants Habib

Steve Bruce has revealed his interest in Aston Villa’s right-back Habib Beye.
Bruce said:
“It’s defensively that we are looking to do things this month,” said Bruce.
“I went to bat with only two full-backs, McCartney who is sick this weekend and Bardsley. It gives me problems whenever there is a slight injury.
“We are still looking to sign players at the back, it’s the area we are short. We are down to the bare bones in that respect so that’s where we are trying to reinforce and strengthen.
“Habib Beye is one I like and admire, but that’s as a far as it has gone at the moment.
“We are interested in him and we have had a look at him, but I’m not sure whether we are going to be able to do anything.”
I for one would welcome this signing. It might be a short-term fix but he’d be a welcome replacement for the average Phil Bardsley.
Portsmouth 2-1 Sunderland…Help!

Yet another poor result from the lads yesterday. After Brucie’s inspired speeches during the week I think we expected Sunderland to come out all guns blazing and sweep aside a poor Pompey side to book our place in the 5th round cup draw.
But, as we have become accustomed to, we were let down. I’m really unsure where the blame lies and in all honesty, I don’t care. The fact of the matter is, we need new players in and we need them fast. Sunderland play Everton on Wednesday night and it would be nice if we have a signing or two in before then. It’s obvious that McCartney and Bardsley are very much weak links in the Sunderland side. McCartney is regularly sidelined due to injuries and unknown illnesses. When he does play he looks uninterested and quite simply, he isn’t good enough.
Matthew Kilgallon was our first January signing (unfortunately he was cup-tied yesterday). Putting pen to paper on a 3 year contract last week. I don’t know a great deal about him but he was very popular amongst the Sheffield Utd supporters. You never know, we might have unearthed another Phil Jagielka. But looking at past signings we’ve made from the Championship, I wouldn’t put my money on it.
So, to the game:
Sunderland went one up against Portsmouth when Jordan Henderson flicked on a Sunderland throw in the direction of Darren Bent who hit the ball into the back of the Portsmouth net. That was Darren Bent’s 15th goal of the season. Sunderland were the better side in the opening stages and Portsmouth didn’t really look like troubling us. But Portsmouth were gifted a goal before half-time when Craig Gordon was caught way out of position and Utaka managed to head the ball over the stranded keeper and into the net.
Portsmouth scored their second goal not long after half-time. A Gordon goal-kick was launched right back into his own area from a Younes Kaboul headed clearance. It fell to Utaka who calmly nestled the ball past Gordon and into the Sunderland goal to make it 2-1.
Sunderland huffed and puffed but they couldn’t make their few chances count. Da Silva had a header cleared off the line late on that the Sunderland players and fans were convinced was over. But the referee and linesman decided otherwise and Sunderland’s grim run of form on the road continues.
Chelsea 7-2 Sunderland…Stuffed!

What an awful performance!
Our players looked as though they’d accidentally wandered onto a park field, having randomly met up without any prior knowledge of one another. And decided to have a gentle kick about. After a night on the lash.
Yeah…ok, it was Chelsea! But there really aren’t any excuses for such a poor display. The Sunderland “players” showed no heart and no desire to make an impact on the game whatsoever. From the outside, it looked as though they’d quietly agreed that they had no chance of getting anything out of the game and settled to put in the bare minimum needed to just get by. The basics like passing to a man two yards away they struggled to do and even running looked like it was a new fad they’d never seen before.
Chelsea swept us aside as if they were playing a friendly against a non-league side made up of trialists. We didn’t show up and yet again it’s a game that has highlighted so many flaws in our play. We find it difficult to change things around when we’re on the defensive. And we quite simply don’t have the players to play on the counter-attack as our counter-attacks somehow develop into a counter-attack for the opposition.
We have been hit by injuries and suspensions but they only outline the inadequacy of our squad. It is too small and we severely lack any sort of quality in depth. Further investment is a must but after splashing the cash over the past two seasons we still need at least four more first team-players. Our wingers are ineffective, we don’t score enough from midfield and the defence at the moment is a shambles.
It was 4-0 to Chelsea at half-time. If the game had finished 15-2 I don’t think we could have argued. By the end Anelka and Lampard had scored two, Cole, Ballack and Malouda were on the score sheet as well. Bent and Zenden both scored consolation goals.
We can only hope Bruce gets a few players in before the deadline closes.
Roll on next week…and the FA Cup.
