Justice for Sunderland Against Arsenal
By
Justice was served at the near death in the Stadium of Light yesterday as Darren Bent smashed the ball into the back of the Arsenal net to earn Sunderland a deserved draw.
Arsene Wenger was left seething, complaining his Arsenal side were robbed of victory after referee Phil Dowd played on a measly 11 seconds to the “minimum” four minutes added time. It will not be a surprise to Sunderland fans as Wenger has never been gracious in defeat (it must have felt like a defeat!) and his post-match interviews after playing us in recent seasons have been rather embarrassing.
Excuses are the reasons of a weak man Arsene.
The Sunderland goal always looked like coming; it just so happened that the equaliser was the last kick of the match. After dominating so much of the play and looking the more dangerous of the two sides Sunderland would have left aggrieved had we not managed to gain a point, at the very least.
The scenes when Sunderland grabbed the equaliser were epic. Strangers hugging like long lost brothers and sisters meeting for the first time in years, shins bruised and left gushing with blood from scraping on the seats in front and the celebratory roar was like no other.
The game started well for Sunderland, having most of the play. But when the ball was played back to Anton Ferdinand in his own half, he was slow to clear and Cesc Fabregas was quick to pounce, blocking Ferdinand’s effort to clear the ball forward and fortunately deflecting the ball from 30 yards over the head of the stranded Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet.
It was a freak goal.
Thankfully we kept our heads and continued where we’d left off, playing some great football and dominating the game up until the half way mark. The possession statistic at half-time apparently read 65%-35% in our favour. Not many Premier league sides could boast such dominance against the Gooners, a side renowned for their passing game.
The second half was similar to the first. Sunderland had the majority of the play but it was very much end to end stuff.
Alexander Song was shown a red card for his second yellow of the game. His first yellow was the result of consistent fouling and his second was a reckless challenge on Steed, leaving Dowd with no other option but to send him off.
I thought we would take advantage of the extra man after outplaying Arsenal for much of the game. However, Arsenal proved to be a much tougher prospect with ten men, tightening up at the back and breaking with speed on the counter.
Arsenal were becoming more and more dangerous and when Nasri was clumsily tripped by Elmo inside the area Dowd blew for a penalty. Rosicky stepped up to take it and reminiscent to Patrick Vieira’s penalty at the Stadium of Light many years ago he skyed the ball straight over the bar much to the relief of the Sunderland faithful. Game well and truly back on.
Sunderland continued to pile the pressure on Arsenal and were duly rewarded seconds from time. Clichy’s clearance from a goal-mouth scramble fell straight to the prolific Darren Bent who blasted the ball into the net.
Good result in the end. It’s a game we should have won but we put in a top performance and continue to improve. The future’s looking bright.
I’d like to add that it was refreshing to see a capable referee for a change. Phil Dowd is the best referee I’ve seen for a long while, it’s a shame we don’t see such consistency on a regular basis.

Fair assessment.
We weren’t at the races yesterday. I was surprised at how well Sunderland played. If you can keep up that level of performance you should be in for a good season.

Good article Mark and the Gooners I spoke to on their way back to the car park were very gracious (unlike their manager) in the fact that we were the better side and more than deserved our point. I have a lot of time for Arsenal fans very fair and knowledgeable, so good luck to them. As for us, upwards and onwards, hopefully a good cup run and progress into the top ten. Haway the Lads

Yeah…good on sunderland…nice to see the weaker and much lower teams, who don’t really have much to play for, beat bigger teams like United, Chelsea and Arsenal…makes the league interesting.
Sunderland are in the league simply to make up the numbers, but what they did yesterday was amazing…kept super arsenal at bay and managed to rob them from all three points!! Amazing!! I hope they remain in the premiership…should be tough, but i think they can pull it off with a bit of luck.

@ Carlos – Poor fishing trip mate. Better luck next time ;)
@ Paul Lund, yeah I have to agree. They’re a good bunch on the most part are the Gooners. I noticed they were mixing well amongst the Sunderland fans before the game.
3 points next week? We’re due an away win…and we’re due an away win at Anfield!

It was a choker for this Gooner. It always is when you lose a goal in the final seconds. And with pretensions of winning the league this season I really think we have to win these away games. You wouldn’t have got a kind word out of me for hours after the game. But after reflection today I know Sunderland deserved the point and played a tremendous game. You guys are alright – I enjoyed your company yesterday. Good Luck.

@ Carlos “I bet ur great great grandkids won’t even see the team lift a trophy…”
You’re probably right. But that’s how Sunderland fans differ from people like you. We don’t care if we win anything, if we do, it’s a bonus. We’ll go to the games, get behind the players regardless. It’s called Passion, something you appear to lack. I feel for you mate. You obviously support your team for the wrong reasons but each to their own.

A draw was a fair result considering how well you played, however I can’t agree with your assessment that the ref had a good game. Also, the “reckless challenge” that Song made was actually an obstruction & a second yellow was a bit harsh, still we benefit from decisions like that all the time so not complaining too much. The fact that your goal was scored in the 5th minute of extra time is irrelevant, you play to the final whistle however long it takes & it happens. We got lucky with Cesc’s goal & missed a penalty, it happens, but I would have taken a point before the game quite happily. Don’t forget we drew a lot of games on the way to winning the PL during our “Invincibles” season so it’s all encouraging.
Would also like to say I’ve been up to the Stadium of Light a couple of times & the fans have always been really friendly & welcoming so I hope you guys have a great season, put in a few more performances like that one & you’ll do well :-)

as a gooner i dont understand the doomsday articles regarding a draw away at sunderland with 10 men. sunderland are a very good side and im reasonably happy with the result. we got lucky then you got lucky and it was a good tough game, bit steep hammering on about how you were the better side with only a minimal amount more possession and the same shots on goal with an extra man but thats how it goes sometimes.

Hilarious? You need to get out more Tony.
From Arsenal’s showing on Saturday they haven’t got a chance of winning anything either. So how about we kick Arsenal out of the league for a laugh? They could play in France instead. Good eh?

Hey Mark, did u hear? Sunderland PASSIONATELY got kicked out by a team sitting at the bottom of the table….that speaks volumes man!! Top ten finish for sunderland? No chance……:))
