Sunderland Had No Chance – Arsene Wenger
ByArsene Wenger reckons Sunderland didn’t have a chance against Arsenal yesterday.
He must have missed the goal then.
What is it with Wenger? He’s always the same. We put in a great performance against Arsenal at the Emirates last season, again creating the better opportunities (especially in the first half) but instead of acknowledging our performance he decided to attack our choice of tactics.
Arsenal were also very lucky to rescue a point in the dying minutes of injury time last season at the Stadium of Light. But yeah…our tactics were to blame as Arsenal should have been allowed to beat us convincingly.
You have to earn your points Arsene and yesterday your team were beaten by the better side on the day. It’s no-one’s fault but your own I’m afraid.

Arsenal were way under par yesterday (due to the fact 98% of the team were away on international duty and did not return till just hours before the game) yet they totally dominated sunderland but just lacked a spark in the final third. Sunderland were at home yet played as if they were away from home (very negative if you ask me)Sunderland just got a lucky break from a corner when the ball bounced off frazier capbell straight into the path of darren bent! I think if this game had not come after an international break then Arsenal would of won this game by 3 or 4 goals as they would of been much sharper!

Sunderland were lucky on several counts. Firstly, they were playing a team that had players returning from international duty who had played 2 games in the space of 5 days. Secondly, the goal was lucky. It was a ricochet from a corner. Thirdly, arsenal were unlucky with their finishing. Fourth, the arsenal players that were drafted to spearhead the attack have had very few games this season, and were not as match sharp as they could have been. In short, a jammy and undeserved win in a game that should have been a draw.

All ifs and buts. We can only beat what’s in front of us, you rarely threatened our goal. I take it you only watched the highlights on Match of the Day and not actually attend the game?
Your fellow fans who were actually at the game seem to disagree with you.

There are no ifs and buts. The reason why Sunderland won was down to the international calendar, leaving more time for you to prepare your negative game plan, injuries to arsenal players and good luck. Not because of the quality of your team. Accept your good fortune and get over it.

What negative game plan? We attacked as much as you did. You only woke up after we scored. I take it you didn’t see the game.

The game in which we had 67% of the possession and more of the chances (12 to 7). Get over it, you were lucky. Lucky in the game and lucky to face arsenal after the international break and with key attackers not match fit.

John possession means nothing. The majority of the time your players were passing it around, playing pretty football but getting absolutely no-where. It was counter-productive.
You had no real cutting edge (and only had 2 good opportunities). You keep on saying you didn’t have any fit players etc. It’s a poor excuse. Excuses are the reasons of weak men my friend.
In your rantings you also fail to forget that Sunderland were mssing four first team players in: Michael Turner, Lee Cattermole (who have both been fantastic since signing), Craig Gordon and Kenwyne Jones (remember him? He smashed two goals past your boys a few seasons ago at the Emirates).

Mark, the basis of your argument is that you want to convince everybody that your win was well deserved and that Sunderland possess quality. It’s a very weak argument my friend. You won against Liverpool with another bizarre lucky goal and then you went and tanked it against Birmingham. Why don’t you just admit that you were opportune yesterday, and that a mid table finish will be a good season.
November 22nd, 2009 at 1:31 pm
But…we outplayed Liverpool and we outplayed Man Utd. You obviously did not watch either game and I’ll bet you didn’t watch the game yesterday.
Either way…we won yesterday and that’s all that matters to us. I doubt you’ll win the league now. Your midfield is too soft. Chelsea are the best side I’ve seen against Sunderland so far this season.
A mid-table finish would be progress for us. I really don’t see your point, I’m not trying to compare our success to that of Arsenal and Man Utd but give credit where it’s due. You’re a very sore loser mate, just like your manager.

John,
Never mind the fact we won and having seen the entire game cant really agree with your view of this, but I must admit your argument does have a basis and a very obvious flaw with your team winning the premiership, if all you can blame the loss on is the international games as well as injuries, I seem to notice our main players were missing too, but it shows that obviously your squad does not have enough depth to be contenders for the title I mean I didnt see Man utd or Chelsea suffering too much.

The point is that it is not a level playing field. Lauding Chelsea just means that you are congratulating those with the most money. What’s the point in that ? You are due no credit. You had a week to prepare, with fresher players, against a team that would be physically more tired. That’s not an excuse. It’s a fact. Your players are not all full internationals. In any case, frankly, teams will wise up to you after Xmas, where you will slip down in the premiership table. It always happens to johnny come latelys with money. It happened to Portsmouth and it will happen to you. Don’t try to extract kudos when all you did was take advantage of a very good day to be playing us. On the last point, if a team genuinely deserves to beat Arsenal and were clearly the better side, then congratulations. This was not one of those situations.

Sunderland fans on high after a very lucky win! Yes, lucky! I did watch the match. You had a one good chance and you scored, that’s lucky. There should have been a penalty for Arsenal but referee couldn’t see it. that’s very lucky. So you won, good for you but don’t get too cocky or you will get punished by Portsmouth, Bolton or the likes.

One more thing, leave Arsene Wenger alone. He speaks his mind, if you can’t take it – don’t listen.
November 22nd, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Ziggy what are you going on about? We’ve already beaten Bolton this season.
We only had one chance? Well that’s that then. You obviously didn’t watch the game. As for the penalty, it would have been extremely soft. It was the right decision.
John what are you going on about? These players are fit enough to play a few games in a week. Stop making poor excuses mate. You’re embarrassing yourself. Your team were beaten by a better, more organised side on the day.
I’m loving this.

John, honestly mate what are you going on about? I dont even know where to start, it appears the other lads have torn apart most of your arguement. However it did make me laugh when you said our players aren’t full internationals… our 2 stand in centre backs both captain paraguay and ghana respectively (Da Silva and Mensah) neither of which required play-offs to reach the world cup, Lorik Cana captains his country too and gave a performance that will no doubt have Wenger kicking himself that he didnt sign him when he had the chance. Darren Bent started for england against Brazil…sorry did you miss that game due to the lack of arsenal players involved? I could go on to list the rest of our internationals but according to John you have to play for france to call yourself a ‘full’ international.
Your french lads ought to think themselves lucky Ireland were without Andy Reid, judging by yesterdays game he is more creative than any of your continental S**t.
